モダンフィッシュの牽引者の1人、メイヘムによるショートムービー『フィッシュ』
  
CTのトップサーファーたちが乗る最先端のボードを削るシェイパー、メイヘムことマット・バイオロス。モダンフィッシュの先駆けとしても有名ですね。1997年にリリースされた『5’5” ✕ 19 1/4”』は、コンペタイプのトライフィンばかりのボードシーンを変える引き金になったムービーの1つでした。あれから20年ちょいの時を経て、フィッシュの歴史を振り返るショートムービー、その名もズバリ『FISH』が公開。
クリス・ワードにコリー・ロペス、アーロン“ゴーキン”コーミカン、アンディ・アイアンズ・・・。ロストワールドが好きな人にはたまりませんね。オリジナルがVHSだけにレイドバック感もいいし、BGMもナイス。ナレーターがCRステシックⅢというのもさすがだし、いいこと言ってます。
ツインフィンは決して流行遅れにならない。再び解釈され直して、また戻ってくる。

メイヘムがフィッシュをつくりはじめたのは1994年。ライダーのクリス・ワードが、ハワイでトム・カレンがフィッシュに乗ってるのに触発されて「オレにもつくって！」と頼んだのがきっかけだとか。カレンがトム・ピーターソンのファイアーボール・フィッシュや、スキップ・フライのサンディエゴ・フィッシュに乗り、“変わり者”扱いされてたすぐあとの頃ですね。

メイヘムはフィッシュなど削ったこともなく、どんなものかと地元サンクレメンテのサーフショップをリサーチ。壁にかかってた70年代後期～80年代初期の、MRっぽいツインフィンにインスパイアされながらも、オリジナルのフィッシュを編み出しました。それがメイヘムの代表作の1つ、〈ラウンドノーズフィッシュ〉の原型。ノーズがいまほど丸くない初期モデルの短い板で、クリス・ワードやコリー・ロペスたちが攻めまくる『5’5” ✕ 19 1/4”』はカレンが自らボードをシェイプするなど、テイラー・スティールのコンペタイプの作品とは一線を画す、創造性に富んでました。

メイヘムがモダンフィッシュをつくったあと、レトロフィッシュのブームに。しかし、メイヘムはレトロフィッシュは一切つくらず・・・。そのことについて、以前インタビューしたときにこう言ってました。
前進することに集中したいし、敬愛するシェイパーの著作権物をコピーすることはしたくない。
スティーブ・リズやスキップ・フライのフィッシュをみんながみんなコピーして、ポピュラーになったよね。オリジナルのシェイパーに許諾を得ることもなく。酷い話だよね。
僕はマーク・リチャーズに電話したんだ。「ヘイ、マーク！ マット・バイオロスだよ。僕もそうだし、みんなマークのボードが大好きなんだ。1980年のワールドチャンピオンのツインフィンを、もう一度作ってみてはどうかな？」。
するとマークが答えた。「マット、僕はもう25年も当時のボードなんて作ってないんだよ」。
で、僕はこう言った。「僕らも手伝うよ。売ることのヘルプもするからさ」。
その後、マークは僕の家に来て50本のツインフィンを作った。家族と一緒にスノーボードに行ったりしながらね。

このムービーが、トム・ブレークやボブ・シモンズ、スティーブ・リズといったツインフィン – フィッシュのルーツからはじまるのは、ライダーたちに前進するフィッシュを提供できてることへのリスペクトかも知れません。ぼくたちもテイクオフが圧倒的に早く、乗ってからもグングン走るボードを発明してくれたシェイパーたちに感謝しなければ、ですね。

Introducing the new Twin Fin by 2x World Champion Beau Young.

New to our range of Beau Young Signature series boards is the AQSS Gold Fish, a traditionally shaped Twin Fin Fish. Beau Young designed this board for a variety of conditions from small beach breaks, long down the line points to solid reef breaks.

The Gold Fish is constructed with a sturdy double stringer and multilayered glass job in a wet rub finish. The board’s fish tail has incredibly detail with a timber eco wood chock on each tip to not only look the goods but also decrease the chance of chips and dings on the pointed tail sections.

The shape has been kept traditional with a wider outline and slightly pulled in nose for increased paddle power and stability, whilst the tail section has been refined with a channel bottom to increase speed and flow.

If you are looking at a dedicated Twin Fin then the Gold Fish may just be the one.

For Californian surfers, Mexico is always a blip on the radar, providing an easy escape from many the overcrowded lineup. In “Damage Frito”, RVCA Advocates Alex Knost & Ellis Ericson pack up the van and head south of the border to find a mixed bag of right pointbreaks, some playful, many exciting. From gliding across slow, Malibu-esque walls to threading through fast, hollow sections, the unique lines drawn by both surfers is very pleasing to the eyes. As they trade waves and swap boards, our only thought is that we wish we were there. Photos by Delon Bone, video by Jimmy Jazz James, song by White Fence.
