A Trip to the Savage Land
Van tires roll off the pavement a few miles from the coast of mainland Mexico. Modern civilization has long been abandoned, as the search for a rumored beach break begins. The crew drives in on a black sandy trail, passing rundown houses, overgrown palms, and stone-faced Federales, making way through the landscape. They are eager and loose as the whisper of the waves grows closer, summoning a restless edge that calls for a more primal self.
Each day starts before sunrise. They drink instant coffee and put together daypacks for the two-mile trek towards the beach. Once the jet-skis are in the water, the sessions begin. Hollow, shore-breaking barrels continue as long as the sun is up, creating a platform for stylish and powerful surfing. Evenings are spent eating locally caught fish and drinking beer from beat-up glass bottles.
The need for a trip like this will never go away. Advocates find a fix in these desolate landscapes, feeding off of the raw energy and uncertain safety net that new territory brings. Perspective is gained in a simpler place, as the ongoing search for the Savageland carries on.

We’ve been working on this one for a while now
- the ultimate Logger Trunk. Featuring a slightly higher waistband with a shorter leg (16”), a non rash fabric with a little stretch.
Minimal retro branding and some iconic colour-ways of yesteryear. Our team riders Paul Nunn, Tom Payne and Johnny Gill gave them a good test run down the coast and gave them the thumbs up.
This style was produced in conjunction with Surfstitch.

Wheels & Waves California is a tight-knit, invite-only moto event that is a much smaller, complementary version of the well-known annual European motorcycle show. This past August, the star-spangled version of Wheels & Waves took place over three days in the small surf town of Cayucos, California, 200 miles north of L.A. by way of the famous Pacific Coast Highway. Iron & Air teamed up with our friends at Converse to roll in and cover this “who’s who” of two-wheeled culture.

An explosive double feature for our SURF FILM NACHT spring tour march/ april 2018:
THE CHURCH OF THE OPEN SKY (AU, 2017, Regie: Nathan Oldfield. 55 Min.) + THE OUTRIDER (UK, 2018. Regie: Jeremy Joyce. 25 Min)
Info and dates: www.surffilmnacht.de
THE OUTRIDER is the follow-up to the amazing mockumentary FREEZING. This time, the british directors tell the hilarious story of North Shore shaper Mike Strident, who shaped the most radical board ever ridden - "The Outrider". Strident's single fin design changed the game and took him to the very pinnacle of professional wave riding. But then he was made irrelevant over night by the three-fin movement. Strident's genius was forgotten. But 40 years later, Californian free surfer, Tommy Tonata discovers the last remaining "Outrider" and tries to revive the design. Strident is forced back into the surfing limelight - there are talk show meltdowns, Karate fights in the shaping bay and some shit hot single-fin surfing action.
THE CHURCH OF THE OPEN SKY is the latest feature length release from award winning independent Australian filmmaker Nathan Oldfield.
Shot on location in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka, the film features Dave Rastovich, Lauren Lindsey Hill, Tom Wegener, Belinda Baggs, CJ Nelson, Alex Knost, Johnny Abegg, Neal Purchase Jr, Jasson Salisbury, Devon Howard and many others.
'The Church of the Open Sky' is a luscious visual love poem that explores gratefully lived surfing journeys. It is a sea soaked celebration of the exquisite preciousness of being alive.

“I'd never really travelled somewhere that is so harshly effected by weather the way that I felt it there, the systems and weather patterns were so unpredictable, I've never seen a forecast change so dramatically.” Torren Martyn tells SurfStitch.
The very essence of travelling can be more rewarding than any other experience. The little things we can all relate to that come side by side with the adventure itself; living in anticipation and angst for what’s on the other side, meet and greets with new faces, trying cultural cuisines, the journey as a whole into what essentially is the unknown. But sometimes, Mother Nature has other plans than the experience you were hoping for.
After monitoring the charts for months in search of a perfect swell and a unique spot, Torren Martyn and lensman Ishka Folkwell finally made the call. The Philippines – home to crystal clear waters, pumping reef breaks and in this case, 7-10 foot of predicted swell from a cooperative direction equipped with friendly offshore winds. A new destination to explore and a new culture to encapsulate and embrace.
It all sounded like a dream. One minute hanging on the outer skirts of Byron Bay, the next, en route to Cloud 9 and its surrounding areas. However, it wasn’t long until the bubble burst, and the realisation that nature had taken the reigns with her own plans kicked in. The excitement of what was declared to be the perfect expedition came to a swift holt when a powerful category 1 typhoon, named Vinta, formed off the county’s southern coastline.
What came next was truly the opposite of clockwork. Paradise one day, disaster zone the next.
The idea of endless days in the sunshine finding shelter in perfect barrels, gone as Vinta raged through with wrath and destruction. Amongst the flash flooding and landslides, she also brought onshore gusts up to 130km per hour and rough seas that were, at the time, seen to be ‘unsurfable’….. or so we thought.
Take the plunge into the abyss and join Torren Martyn on the island of Siargao in search of unridden, sheltered set ups, while getting a stern lesson in storm etiquette. Welcome to ‘Dear Vinta.’
We are proud to release the newest creation from 2 x World Champion Beau Young, the Re Evolution.
The AQSS Re Evolution longboard encapsulates the the evolution of the traditional vintage styled longboards from the 70’s and the modern log creating the perfect mix which can handle all wave conditions with ease.
The Re Evolution has pinched 50/50 rails and they have been refined to not only give you enough hold and lift during nose riding but also deliver instant engagement to perform manoeuvres in any section of the wave.
The Re Evolution has a single Paulownia Stringer running through the centre of the board with an olive resin tint and a fabric inlay patch which wraps around the tail.
The deck features 6oz + 6oz Volan with an extra 6oz deck patch in Volan for extra strength making them one of the toughest logs we have created.
The bottom lamination consists of a 4oz fibreglass + 6oz volan and a 6oz fibreglass
