Duct Tape Festival Handshapes

"I've never seen anyone do this before," says Dane Reynolds before pulling the trigger of his power planer and giving the rails of a shortboard blank perfectly-squared edges—something no shaper would ever do...well, not no shaper, apparently. Unlike some of the guest shapers selected for the Duct Tape Festival in Huntington Beach earlier this month, Reynolds has logged copious hours in the shaping bay over the years, making himself plenty of functional boards to mess around on when he isn't stacking clips on his standard Channel Islands sticks. In this instance, however, rather than crafting something that he knew would work, Reynolds chose to take the ethos of the festival—a celebration of experimentation and DIY values—to illogical extremes and make something "super jacked." Many planer passes later, he had two finished blanks ready to go: one kidney-bean-looking asymmetrical and another craft covered in right angles. Vans surfers Leila Hurst and Tosh Tudor, as well as skater Austin Kanfoush also contributed to the jacked quiver, which was housed in a trippy wooden shack handmade by fine artist Chris Johanson right on the beach in Huntington for the extent of the Vans US Open of Surfing. In the video above, you can watch Reynolds and co. carve out their misfit shapes before putting them to the test and talking through the good, the bad and the ugly aspects of the designs. It's one of the weirder quivers you're liable to find, and it's all in good fun.
