Of the 4 samples selected from our library to help Josie Prendergast develop her own fin, the first one she picked up was always going to be a favourite.
In neat surf at The Pass with fins laid out on the sand, the traditional dolphin shape caught her eye first and became the measure for everything else she tried.
After 2 days, countless rides and some tweaks to outline and foil - the Josie fin was born.

"My brother, Sage made me this 5'8" x 20" x 2 3/8" round nose, round tail single fin about a month ago. It's modelled on a couple of smaller double ender looking single fins Dad shaped at the end of the 1970's. Boards were continually getting shorter, in the search for the perfect length, long enough for plenty of drive, yet short enough to surf tighter and deeper in the pocket of the wave.
I had been watching Morning of the Earth a fair bit in the weeks prior to getting my singley and was especially inspired with Nat's flying highlines and Terry Fitz's epic mop. My first surf was so much fun. It felt so refreshing to draw some different lines, especially trying out a few soul arches flying along the top of 2 footers. I've been riding this little board for about 75% of my surfs and it is always so much fun. I'm surfing by myself most of the time and am enjoying not worrying about ripping waves to shreds, it's all about going fast and drawing longer, different lines."

The glassy, small, and punchy beach breaks of Newport provide a fantastic testing facility for a diverse spectrum of surfboards. On this beautiful morning we find Grant Noble, Joey Bookout, Kyle Kennelly, and Troy Elmore sharing some fun, playful waves on the surfboards mentioned above.
Troy Elmore is surfing one of his self shaped 5'5" Elmore Frye'd Fish, nearly identical to the 5'4" Elmore Frye'd Fish we have as apart of our Research Center. We'll often hear from Members of our Research Center that their favorite fish models ossiolate between Elmores and STPNKs. Kyle Kennelly is bouncing between the Research Center's 7'0" Fineline MP and 7'10" Liddle Baby V, great boards for effortless trimming and relaxed, low performance gliding. Joey Bookout was drawing graceful and unique lines on his own board that isn't apart of our Research Center. Joey is one of our favorite local shredders, the cat has style for days! Don't worry, we'll catch him on one of our Research Center sleds next session.
The most interesting conclusion of the day was from Grant. He was trading off between the Daydream Research Center's Griffin Stepanek (STPNK) Keel and Paddle Keel Fish models. The Paddle Keel fin design can scare people but Grant found that between trading off between the standard Keel Fish and Paddle Keel allowed him to hold most of the other variables constant and focus on the differences between the fins. Grant's conclusion was that the Paddle Keels seemed to have a sort of rubber band resonance that would allow him to spring out of his turns more and aided in reducing drag. If grant were to see both in the rack of our Research Center, he'd most definitely choose to ride the Paddle Keel Fish.

The Rusty Twin Fin - Designed by Rusty Preisendorfer, road tested by Pama Davies in Indonesia.
“ Starting with a template Rusty used in the 70's & 80's while working with Shaun Tomson as his base Rusty refined the bottom with the addition of a shallow single concave that feeds into the vee. The vee splits into a double in front of the fins and runs off the rail behind the wing. The position of the wing, the back of the fin in conjunction with the concave exiting through the wing makes for solid firm turns. The foil in the rail line is very similar to a modern performance shortboard.”

Lee Wilson's "Five Eight"
"This swell popped up and it was super hyped. Like “Biggest in Ten Years” big. Brixton was backing it, so I decided to get out there. Board-wise; I had a shorty and a 5’8" slab board I designed with my shaper. On the way to the airport I picked up two stockies. Took me 24 hours to get there. Did my best to cut costs so I witnessed some weird shit on the way, I'll save that story for another day. When I got there, it was about three times bigger than I expected, and to be honest, I felt pretty insignificant out there. The best big wave surfers in the world were all there wearing what they call an "impact vest”. Basically it's a thick vest that is designed to help you float you to the top and protect your tail bone from heavy impact against coral. Big Wednesday comes and I ride a stock 6’2" and ended up wiping out so bad (I have trouble riding step ups) and I sat the rest of the day out and watched..it was terrifying, even from the beach. Honest. I knew the next day was gonna be solid as well and when I woke up it’s flames.
