It was about a week out that we saw a swell headed our way. It appeared as a big red cloud of potential creeping up the west coast of Australia and our first thoughts were to see if we could position ourselves between it and where it was to crash on the Bali coast. The Deus Lombok Surfari

This is a story about three friends. All of whom herald from the same small coastal town in Western Java, all of whom had fallen under the spell of surfing. A spell cast by those first surf pioneers who roamed the southern coast of Java looking for waves during the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. It’s a small knit community in their town in paradise, full of people who rely on each other for everything. A place where they shared what little they had. For these three, and a handful of others who aren’t the focus of this yarn, that included the first surfboards they’d managed to acquire through travelers either from breakage or gifts. Their town was fortuitous enough to be on the map for the water magicians who passed through. Blessed with a wave that’s now something of an international attraction. Harrison Roach

The dancing dandy starring in the film above is Mr. Harrison Roach, one of the darlings of the post-modern ride-anything movement. For the last 10 years Harry and a handful of "open-minded" free surfers have managed to scrape livings as an aspirational, relatable, journeyman aesthete. For Harry and surfers like him, their marketability has come not in spite of, but because of, his abstinence from anything like mainstream high-performance equipment, ie. the modern thruster. And this makes some people very angry. Many of you watching this right now have long held the belief that the heavily-glassed, elegantly tinted alternative equipment these “hipster kooks” ride has concealed fundamental flaws in their surfing. "Put these guys on a real surfboard," you say. "Then we’ll see how pretty they look.” This is what happens when you put one of surfing’s foremost alternative stylists on teamlite foam and fiberglass.

CRÈME Playpig

The Creme Play Pig is a classic 60's inspired log, the wide point set right back with a pulled in nose and a tight pin tail. The bottom contour is rolled from nose to tail complemented by a rail foil that is boxy relative to most Gato Heroi's, but inline with the fuller Creme models. Entry rocker is quite pronounced mellowing in the back 2/3's of the board and gradually extending throughout the tail. True to its period of inspiration the Playpig is a very cruisy board to surf, it pivots nicely from the tail and really feels like a classic board when coupled with a D fin or something with similar volume... Smooth, stylish, classic surfing.
