We were all set to make a strike mission to mainland Mexico when the plan did a full 180-degree chop hop.

Adios Mexico, hello Waco, Texas!

Huh?

You read that right. A surf trip to Waco. Former home of the Branch Davidians cult, current home to the world’s latest and greatest wave pool.

Despite being over 200 miles from the nearest body of saltwater, we rocked up to a white sandy beach and absolutely perfect waist to chest high waves. Lefts and rights peel off in sets of three every minute and a half. You want an air wedge? Holler at Cheyne Magnusson (seen blasting a huge backside air at the 2:19 mark). Tube section? Coming right up. A drunken redneck telling you how sick the waves are in Waco? He’s floating around in the lazy river.

Mayhem Surf Team shred the Wavegarden Cove

One of our favourite sessions happened last year with Mayhem surfers Kolohe Andino (USA), Carissa Moore (HAW), Griffin Colapinto (USA) and Winter Vincent (AUS). Each surfer rode around 100 waves each. Kolohe and Griffin even went head-to-head in a game of SURF, trying to execute identical manoeuvres one after the other.

Meet The Duct Tape’s New Wave First-time VANS Duct Tape competitors Nico Garcia, Zack Flores, Levi Prairie, Kai Takayama, Saxon Wilson and Nathan Sadoun are the next generation of world-class loggers Nearly a decade and a half since the release of Thomas Campbell's seminal 2004 movie “The Seedling,” which starred Joel Tudor, and others from the era's emerging Southern California underground longboard scene, the film stands out as a watershed event for surfing, as it reintroduced and augmented the style, performance, equipment, and vibrant culture of surfing's past and kickstarted a cultural shift that has reverberated around the globe, influencing surfers from California to Australia to Indonesia to Japan, all the way to the small, insular, surf-crazed town of Zarautz in the Spanish Basque country, where hundreds came out to watch 16 of the world’s best loggers compete in the Duct Tape Invitational. And while “The Seedling" and Campbell's follow-up "Sprout" may have been the spark, Tudor's traveling log-centric exhibition, the Van's Duct Tape Invitational and Duct Tape Festival have continued to stoke the fire, influencing a whole new generation of idiosyncratic longboard stylists, many of whom were invited to the event's most recent iteration in Zarautz. "I feel safe with these guys," Tudor said of the new crop, an international contingent of mostly teens that included Frenchman Nathan Sadoun (19), Californian Zack Flores (17), Floridian Saxon Wilson (17), and Spain's own Nico Garcia (14). "The seed has been planted. This next generation of kids validated that. Now I can work on being on old man." "I always thought [the Duct Tape Invitational] was so cool. I never thought I'd get in," said Flores, who aside from displaying enlightened switch-stance steeze, was one of several competitors from the next gen who shapes his own boards. "I first saw it on the Duct-umentary. I watched it like a million times." It's Asher, and if you're at all familiar with Pacey you'll know this was filmed away from the flashing lights of Bali, on an isolated island off the coast of North Sumatra in hunt of some incredible waves. Captured over an entire week, we were graced with barrelling swells and empty breaks, interspersed with enough time to kick back, crack a beer and soak it all in.
