BLACK SIMONE 2, was one of the first boards I tried from the Fly Black Bird project. At first glance I doubted if the board worked. It’s a 5’2’’ practically no rocker, with a radical moon tail, with beautiful wooden glass on keels (twinzer), a painting with vivid shades of yellow, pink and black. The board is a real experiment. Over time I learned to flow with her, to feel her qualities, to tame her difficulties, and I discovered a fast universe, unusual new possibilities, very different from what I usually see and surf. It was a real love affair. Concessions, sensations, learning, dedication, unforgettable moments. This small clip portrays a session in Carcavelos, filmed by Tobias Ilsanker and another in Ipanema filmed by Caio Guedes. Although it represents only a little of what we live together, the clip records some of these good moments, with a top class soundtrack and that artistic touch of FBB by Pedro Falcão. The conception of a plan is a beautiful thing. The execution is a different thing all together.
Conceived on a autumn afternoon in a placid office setting. The whirring of fans and tapping of keys providing a monotonal backdrop. But no morning, lunch, afternoon or Skype meetings could have pre-pared us for the storm we were so unwittingly brewing. From Lisbon to Paris with the Volcom team, via Ericeira, San Sebastian and Hossegor. We would call it Eurothrash and it would be our vehicle to drive however we wanted.
Beautifully Chaotic.
Three countries. Four surfers. Special Guests. Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Late nights. Early starts. From all time Cave, to fine dining in Paris to turning it up San Sebastian and everything in-between. Super Bocks. Toll Roads. Trains. Vans. Pintxos, Hysterical Laughter. Hangovers bad enough to make grown men cry. 15 man surf checks. 15 man bar crawls. 3 hour lunches. Suspicious bottles of water. “Where’s my wetsuit”. The eternal fin key hunt. Red Wine. White Wine. But somehow we kept it together. Became a functioning machine. Kept the wheels on the road. “A well-orchestrated shit show” Eurothrash became a part of us as we became a part of it. As finished in the European cradle of civilisation - Paris , we couldn’t help but feel humbled. A City whose streets gave birth or played host to; De Gaulle, Chopin, Bardot, Hemingway, Baudelaire, Napoleon, Debussy, Monet, Orwell, Edith Piaf. We’re not the first to thrash our way around Europe, and we sincerely hope we are not the last.

"This was the board I picked outta the board bag and just immediately knew it was gonna be fun. And it didn’t disappoint. It was the best of all the test boards," says Sheldon.
"The SST is a super-loose board that was amazing to turn, especially off the top. I’m dead keen to ride this board more. I feel like the board would really excel in a long point break chest-high or under. It’s bread and butter would be two-to-three foot, down the line waves… especially on your forehand. When the wave gets a little sucky the board just takes off and you’ve just gotta hang on. It’s that fast," he adds.
"I rode it on a fun little right that looked made for a twin. I really wish the conditions were just a bit cleaner, and then it woulda went properly off. As it was, there was a little chop on the face that I thought could bog down the channels."
"In saying that, the board was really drivey. Almost too much speed down the line. But damn, when you got your feet in the right spot this board was so nice to turn! It sure was a nice change from surfing a thruster.:
"The board was really to easy to paddle, being a little bit thicker than I’m used to. And because all the volume is under the front foot you never had to force anything when you were up and riding. It all just came together."

Our all-time most popular design is The Flyer. In 1999 Al was searching for a solution to team riders’ dilemma of needing more speed and flow in lesser waves while maintaining high performance, world tour level surfing. The answer was a board that departed from the then overly narrow designs and set the stage for the modern performance shortboard that is now wider and shorter. The Flyer is easily the most ridden and enjoyed all around board in our history.
Best as an everyday board in everyday conditions, The Flyer has a single concave entry to double through the middle and a vee exit, Al’s signature bump squash, slight down rail, and a subtle nose beak. To be ridden approximately the same length as you are tall.
