A Tale Of Four Surfboards Starring Kanoa Igarashi

It was our hope that the release of this mini-doco, “A Tale of Four Surfboards”, starring last year’s US Open champ, would coincide with back-to-back wins at home for Kanoa Igarashi. And it did! And he celebrated. Hard. Over the past months, we’ve been putting together this US Open Retrospective. We called the boys at Channel Islands and had remakes of Tom Curren’s Red Beauty (which was painted black), the boards of Kelly Slater and Shane Beschen from the ’94 final and the infamous interference call of the ’96 final, and the board Andy Irons did that massive floater on back in ’09. We visited Al and Britt Merrick at their ranch in Ojai. We discussed the interference of ’96 with Mr. Beschen – who lost to Slater in a freak paddling incident. We uncovered that the Andy Irons floater board was actually made for Julian Wilson(!)… until Andy walked into the CI shop and decided it was his. And we revisited the silky transition of an original master of style. Come for Tom, Kelly, Shane and Andy; stay for your US Open Champ's recount and hifi surfing on four boards in classic Huntington slop. The idea was to dive into the past, and honey, nostalgia is one hell of drug. Go ahead, hit the triangle.
